Do I Need Experience to Work in Manufacturing or Distribution?

Do I Need Experience to Work in Manufacturing or Distribution? Phillips Staffing

Which came first – the chicken, or the egg?  That age-old question is similar to what many job seekers face every day – that is, companies often prefer someone with experience, but how can you gain experience until you get a job? Which comes first?

Fortunately, Phillips Staffing can help you work through this with these tips and suggestions:

On-the-Job Training

Most jobs include some level of on-the-job training, whether you are new to the industry or have experience. This can be especially true with an apprenticeship or general laborer position, which is an excellent way to earn money and gain skills while you learn the ropes.

Universal Skills

While some manufacturing and distribution jobs require specific technical skills, others call for simply a general aptitude for machinery, coupled with basic “soft skills” that you can learn virtually anywhere – skills such as teamwork, attention to detail, communication, reading for detail, basic math, problem solving, etc.

Think through your previous experiences, whether through another job, at school, or in other pursuits. What have you done that helped you build and utilize these types of skills? Highlight those experiences on your resume and during your interview.

Put Yourself Out There!

Networking is critical in finding job opportunities, regardless of your level of experience. Go to industry events, job fairs, and connect with companies that are hiring (like Phillips Staffing!). Seek out people working in your desired field, and ask them for guidance or advice in jumpstarting your career.

Temp-to-Hire

Working for a temp-to-hire company can be an excellent way to get your foot in the door of a new industry. Phillips Staffing can help you with this type of position.

As a temp to hire employee, you will work for Phillips at the company’s site for a specified period of time.  At the end of this period the company can bring you on board as a fulltime employee.  Whether you continue with the particular job or not, you gain experience and learn valuable skills.
